"This is a huge loss for our community" says with great sadness Carmelo Rapisarda, Convenor with Dan Gerling of the IOBC-WPRS working group "Integrated control in protected crops, Mediterranean climate". The IOBC-WPRS Council and all Convenors join Prof. Rapisarda in his mourning of Dan Gerling "for his remarkable human and scientific value and for the deep and genuine friendship that, in the course of his active life, he has managed to create with all of us. We all keep alive the memory of his enthusiasm and indomitable desire to know. His tireless activity as a teacher and researcher, that he brought forward until the forces and life have abandoned him, will be for us all a very strong and longlasting example".
Emeritus professor of Zoology (Entomology) in Tel Aviv University Israel. Dan got his PhD in the University of California in Riverside specializing in the host parasitoid interactions of the greenhouse whitefly (http://www.tau.ac.il/lifesci/departments/zoology/members/gerling/gerling.html). He specialized in whitefly agro-ecology since then and studied both, injurious whiteflies, in particular, Bemisia tabaci (s.l.) and its enemies and the whitefly fauna occurring naturally on the native flora.
He jointed the IOBC in 1966 and was a member of he workgroup on Biological Control of Greenhouses in Mediterranean Climate for about 20 years. He has been elected as co-convener of that group.
