Walter A.H. Rossing received a PhD from Wageningen University in 1993 on an interdisciplinary topic in production ecology. Based at Wageningen University, he has worked in and coordinated projects devoted to improving agricultural production and minimizing environmental impact in Europe, Latin America and South-East Asia. As an associate professor at the Biological Farming Systems group of Wageningen University (www.bfs.wur.nl/uk/) he teaches courses on systems approaches, multifunctional land use planning, natural resource use and farming systems design.
Current research projects address the scales of farm and landscape, with a strong emphasis on design and exploration of alternative land use options which better align with ecological processes. Many of his projects have benefited from collaboration among agronomists, ecologists, sociologists and economists. Systems modelling is used as an integrative methodology. His research interests are agronomy, (landscape) ecology, population dynamics, simulation and optimization.
